Aviation buffs alert: the Grump is home

by Rob Howatson

Snohomish County Airport’s Paine Field continues to evolve as a kind of Disneyland for aviation buffs. Located in Everett, Washington, the airport has long housed the Boeing plant tour at the Future of Flight Aviation Centre — a Science World-like attraction filled with interactive exhibits of the latest commercial jet technology. Also onsite: the Seattle Museum of Flight Restoration Centre, where vintage warbirds are prepped for display  in Seattle, and which recently got new neighbours when Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen moved his collection of rare military aircraft down from Arlington.  And now Historic Flight at Kilo-6 is throwing open the hangar doors on its own winged jewels, including a flyable 1944 P-51 Mustang, 1954 Canadair T-33 Silverstar and 1943 B-25 Mitchell nicknamed Grumpy.

Fly-alongs for the public available within the year.

>>Meanwhile, check out this B-25 Bellingham-to-Everett cockpit footage of Grumpy’s return home

Brand new BC wine supports the Great Bear Rainforest

Brand new BC wine supports the Great Bear Rainforest

Ecosystem conservation is a big deal to us British Columbians; there’s the sense that environmental stewardship is everyone’s business. Many BC organizations take this quite literally, including White Bear, the latest addition to the Artisan Wine Co.

Home of the white Spirit bear (just one of the many species that depend on the intact rainforest for survival), the Great Bear Rainforest has lately been cited as a conservation success story because of the multi-stakeholder approach taken to achieve the Great Bear Rainforest Agreement. Two million hectares are now protected against logging; outside of the protected areas Ecosystem Based Management will be implemented for logging operations; and conservation-based economies will be supported in coastal communities.

At this year’s EPIC Sustainable Living Expo, the White Bear label was launched to an environmentally tuned-in audience. A 2007 Pinot Blanc and 2008 Sauvignon Blanc were sampled by thirsty expo-goers. I had the chance to ask Sierra Club of BC’s Moira Campbell about the uniqueness of the Great Bear Rainforest, and to talk to Janelle Donn from White Bear about how the winery is helping.

Who the Hell Is Matt Harding?

The Internet has created a number of oddball celebrities, but none stranger than Matt Harding, a self-confessed 32-year-old slacker and video game designer from Westport, Connecticut. Harding’s claim to fame is a goofy dance he performs in front of various landmarks and locations around the globe. Let’s be perfectly clear: Harding is not a talented dancer. Imagine a big, hefty fellow in shorts and hiking boots bouncing around with his arms and knees pumping awkwardly. Yet somehow, his flailing chicken-step has earned him major TV coverage. Harding has appeared on The Ellen Degeneres Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live, The Daily Show and Inside Edition, to name but a few, and he has been profiled by the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post.
